AI proof meets a rate warning

NVIDIA and Salesforce proved that AI spending is turning into revenue. Then Fed Chair Warsh reminded markets that 3.7% inflation and elevated valuations are an uncomfortable mix. The result: positive weekly indexes, but a far more selective Friday close.

Summary

The week in six statements

1. The week stayed positiveS&P 500 +0.48%, Nasdaq +0.84% and Dow +0.51%. Friday’s hawkish tone slowed the NVIDIA rally without erasing it.
2. Warsh moved the rate anchorThe 2-year yield jumped 14 bp Friday to 4.34%. The curve flattened as markets repriced the near-term policy path more than long-run term premium.
3. NVIDIA validated demand$96.2B revenue, +106% year over year; the $108B Q3 guide beat consensus. Shares rose 8.74% Thursday, then surrendered 4.57% Friday.
4. Software showed monetizationSalesforce gained 22.39% for the week. Agentforce ARR exceeded $1.5B, although a large investment gain inflated the EPS headline.
5. Expectations stayed ruthlessMarvell lost 8.61% for the week. Record revenue was not enough because material Google-related revenue is weighted toward FY2029.
6. Oil eased the inflation channelWTI fell 4.20% to $83.40. More Hormuz flows reduced the risk premium without resolving the geopolitical conflict.
Bottom line: AI demand is real, but Warsh and Marvell exposed the same valuation filter from opposite directions: the higher the discount rate and upfront investment, the faster revenue must convert into margin and free cash flow.
Weekly scorecard

Final weekly scorecard: positive, not carefree

Weekly returns measure adjusted closes from August 21 through the final Friday close on August 28, 2026. Final moves and closing levels were cross-checked against public market reports.

Logic chains

Four logic chains behind the week

Returns are observations; the chains map plausible transmission into rates, margins, cash flow and valuation.

Warsh: 2% is fixed
→
inflation at 3.7%→hike odds rise→2Y +14 bp Friday→tech multiples lose room
The front end reacted more than the long end: a higher expected policy path, not merely a new term-premium shock.
NVIDIA: $108B guide
→
AI demand validated→hyperscaler capex stays productive→chip/data-center revenue rises→Nasdaq week stays positive
Friday’s decline after record results showed that demand proof does not remove margin, memory-supply or valuation risk.
Salesforce: Agentforce
→
AI sold into workflows→cRPO and ARR accelerate→disruption fear recedes→CRM +22.39%
Anthropic-related investment gains distorted EPS; cRPO and recurring revenue are the cleaner quality signals.
Hormuz flows
→
supply premium falls→WTI −4.20%→inflation impulse softens→energy lags, consumers breathe
The relief is fragile: stalled diplomacy and thin shipping can reverse the chain on the next headline.
Macro & rates

Macro & rates: solid demand, inflation still too high

Observation

July PCE +0.2% m/m and +3.7% y/y; core PCE +0.2% and +3.3%. Q2 GDP held at +1.5% annualized, while private domestic final sales were revised up to +4.2%. Friday Treasury yields: 2Y 4.34%, 10Y 4.73%, 30Y 5.22%.

Interpretation

Resilient private demand and sticky prices reduced the case for early easing. Warsh’s view that broad financial conditions were hardly restrictive hit the front end hardest: the 2s10s curve flattened 7 bp over the week.

Risk

Faster disinflation or weaker employment could unwind hike bets. If wages, services and consumption stay firm, the discount rate remains a harder headwind for richly valued duration.

AI & earnings

AI & earnings: demand, yes; free pass, no

On Thursday, NVIDIA and Salesforce validated two layers of the AI stack: infrastructure and enterprise software. On Friday, Marvell showed that a long-dated flagship contract only creates immediate value when timing, margins and incremental revenue exceed what valuation already discounts.

Oil & geopolitics

Oil & geopolitics: price relief, not a peace signal

What happened

WTI closed at $83.40, down 0.16% Friday and 4.20% for the week. Reports of more crude moving through the Strait of Hormuz reduced the immediate supply premium.

Why equities care

Lower oil trims input costs and near-term inflation pressure. That supports consumers, transport and long-duration cash flows, while energy equities lose leverage to higher realizations.

What remains open

U.S.–Iran diplomacy remained stalled. The price drop signals a smaller risk premium, not the removal of military or logistics risk.

Global rotation

Global rotation: Europe firmer, Asia split

Europe

DAX +1.16% and Stoxx Europe 600 +0.56%. Friday stayed positive despite Warsh; lower oil and a rebound in French equities supported the region.

Japan & Korea

Nikkei +0.59%, KOSPI −1.79%. NVIDIA supported Japanese chip names, while Korea lost 123.49 points Friday and surrendered part of Thursday’s rebound.

China & Hong Kong

Hang Seng −1.63%. Slower Chinese profit growth and softer risk appetite outweighed the short-lived AI impulse.

Outlook

Outlook: three paths for Aug. 31–Sep. 4

Relief

  • employment cools without breaking
  • 2Y yield retraces
  • NVIDIA rally broadens
  • oil stays near $83

Selective base case

  • indexes sideways to modestly higher
  • software AI beats broad duration
  • hike risk caps multiples
  • Europe keeps relative strength

Renewed stress

  • jobs/ISM surprise inflationary
  • 2Y yield and dollar rise
  • Hormuz risk returns
  • AI gains face more selling
Watchlist

Watchlist for next week

  1. U.S. jobs report on September 4: wages and unemployment are the cleanest test of Warsh’s hike message.
  2. U.S. 2Y yield: does it hold above 4.30%, or was Friday an overshoot?
  3. NVIDIA at $217.55: can it stabilize after Friday and can suppliers confirm demand?
  4. Salesforce: do cRPO and Agentforce justify the jump after removing the investment gain from EPS?
  5. Marvell: can investors separate deal timing from intact Data Center demand?
  6. WTI/Hormuz: physical vessel flows versus diplomatic headlines.
